BOLD TEACHING. EXCEPTIONAL LEARNING.

ABIS Staff Changes 22/23

ABIS Staff changes 2022/2023

As you all begin your summer plans and take a break for a few months from this crazy school year, look forward to next year-it’s going to be a special one! Read on to see who will be leaving our community as this year ends, and who will be joining it as next year begins. We are both sad to say goodbye to beloved teachers and staff and yet excited for the possibilities that open with new staff and the fresh perspectives they bring.

Saying Goodbye

Samantha Lyke

PYP Coordinator

My time at ABIS has been such a special and treasured time. It was an incredibly challenging decision to leave my position at a school that has such an amazing community. The children, families, and teaching team have been such a big part of my life. Each day at ABIS has been cherished, and I feel so blessed to have been a part of the school’s teaching and leadership team.

It is such a bittersweet moment as I embark on a new journey knowing that anywhere I go, I will bring the memory and lessons learned from ABIS with me. Thank you for the privilege the past 14 years have been. ABIS has truly been a family to my husband, son and me and we know we will stay in touch and come back to visit soon. I am excited to be watching from afar how ABIS continues to grow and develop!

Ms Lyke will be moving to the USA and working as the PYP Coordinator in an IB school in Bend, Oregon next school year.

Sylvia Naglseder

PYP 1 Homeroom Teacher

After just one year (in total 3 years) at ABIS I am sad to be leaving due to family matters. I do think it is the best school in Upper Austria! Thank you for a nice school year 2021/22.

Ms Naglseder is going to live closer to her family and teach at an Austrian Primary School next school year.

Debora Demut

PYP German Teacher

I have enjoyed tremendously working at ABIS for the last two years and I am grateful that I was able to work with such great students and meet so many kind families. I have greatly appreciated being a member of this community!

In the summer I will be moving abroad to continue my studies and I will miss my time here. Thank you for making these years so memorable and for allowing me to grow as an educator.

Ms Demut will be living in Granada, Spain next year.

Chris Lyke

PYP 5 Homeroom Teacher

It is with mixed emotions that I am writing to say goodbye to the ABIS community.  It has been so amazing to be a part of LISA Jr. and ABIS since the very beginning in 2008 and it really has been like a second home for me.  I have had the amazing opportunity to see this school grow and develop so much over the years and it has been an incredible experience to be a part of it all. As my wife and son have also been at ABIS it truly has been a setting that was an extension of our family and we will miss it all very much.

Thanks to all of the students, parents, and staff members who have provided me with so many years of learning, growing, and laughing together. It is the people who make it all worthwhile.

At the same time we are excited about our next adventure as we are moving back to Oregon in the USA this summer. We will definitely keep in touch with the ABIS community and hope to get back to visit soon.

Mr Lyke will be moving back to the USA and teaching in an IB school in Bend, Oregon next school year.

Carina Fürst

PYP German Teacher

Dear ABIS community, I would like to let you know that I am leaving ABIS at the end of this school year.

I want to thank all of you for allowing me to spend my first two years of teaching in such a unique and special school. During my time here I have grown personally and professionally in ways I could never have imagined. The students, parents and my colleagues made ABIS an even better community to teach in. Thank you for making the past two years so special for me and allowing me to grow as an educator.

Ms Fürst will be teaching in an Austrian Primary School next school year.

Elisabeth Baldinger

Religion Teacher

Last year in the summer, I applied for a job at ABIS and was given the chance to spend my first year as a teacher there. I was nervous but also very excited when I entered the classroom for the first time. I have to admit that I was a little overwhelmed at the beginning, but over time I gained more confidence and got used to my new role as a teacher. I have enjoyed teaching, talking, singing, playing, etc. with the students and found a lot of pleasure in preparing them for the First Communion. Sadly, I won’t be able to stay at ABIS as I am going to work at a grammar school in my hometown from September on. While I am looking forward to my new job, I will miss my students, my colleagues and the school. I am very grateful for this special year.

Ms Baldinger will be working in an Austrian grammar school next school year.

Astrid Prinz

ELC Homeroom Teacher Group 1

Dear parents,

Time to say „goodbye“.

With a heavy heart I want to inform you that I will not be teaching in the ELC in September anymore. Please understand that this decision was made because of personal matters and was not at all an easy decision for me. I would like to thank the parents and children for an amazing year, your cooperation, your support, and the loving and heartwarming way you welcomed me in the ABIS family. You have amazing children who will always hold a special place in my heart and I wish everyone the best for the future.

May you always be covered in sunshine!

Big hug

Ms. Astrid

Richard Köttstorfer

ASC
I really enjoyed the past 2 years at ABIS, but unfortunately my time at this school has run out.

Due to some unforeseen circumstances my private life becomes a bit more time intensive and I also want to finish my studies. These are the reasons to say goodbye to a wonderful school and especially to these incredible kids of yours.

I wish you and all children only the best!

Catalina Baer

Ms.Baer was our art teacher in PYP and MYP during the last 3 years. She has had a big impact on our art program and we have gotten to enjoy the beautiful artworks of our students made under Ms.Baer supervision.

Mr.Baer is leaving us at the end of the school year.

Welcome New Staff

Bree Beley

PYP 2B Teacher

I am looking forward to joining ABIS as the PYP2 teacher next school year. I am from the Philippines and have a two year old daughter and we are very excited to be moving to Austria this summer.

I have been a teacher for 11 years and have experience teaching in both secondary and primary level. I used to work in an IB School in Malaysia where I became the Global Head Representative in Grade 6 before I started working at The Affiliated Foreign Language School of SCNU, Guangzhou, China in 2019-2020. Currently, I am a Secondary English Teacher at Singapore School, Philippines.

My philosophy of education is that all children must be treated with equality. Having said such, it is my desire to embrace the diversity of all learners and all minority groups. Moreover, to have taught in an IB school gave me a wide perspective to ensure that I will provide a safe environment where students can have the voice, choice and ownership of their learning. Personally, I see children as little leaders who have the ingrained right to be involved in decisions and issues that affect their own lives. Hence, I aim for them to contribute to and participate in the learning community. In this way, their learning is not just limited to the four corners in the classroom. Thus, it is my role, as an educator, to harness and develop what they already have, to hone their potentials, and to support and nurture students.

Ryan Calupas

PYP 4A Teacher

I am from the Philippines. I am very excited to meet everyone, especially my new 4th grade students and parents. I am grateful and fortunate enough to receive this opportunity of becoming a part of the wonderful ABIS family.

I have been a teacher for almost 11 years in IB schools in countries such as the Philippines, Mexico, Estonia and Japan. I have a degree in Education and I gained certifications from IBO that help me contextualize the aspects of the PYP program in a classroom setting.

It is my teaching philosophy to importantly place the learners as the center of my teaching and learning practices. I believe that it is my duty to help students develop themselves as global citizens who are international-minded and independent lifelong-learners.

Outside the classroom, I travel and hunt for amazing designs of wonderful things. I am looking forward to a great year!

Eva Arrich

PYP German Teacher

I am excited to be returning to ABIS in the fall after my maternity leave. I will be teaching German in PYP and couldn‘t be more excited to come back!

Outside of teaching I have two splendid sons who keep me busy discovering the world together.

I look forward to catching up with students who I’ve taught in the past, and getting to know all of you who I haven’t met yet.

Carlos Reif

MYP Science Teacher

Hello everyone! I am Carlos Reif and I was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. I’ll be joining the Science team at ABIS September 2022. I am passionate about many things but especially nature (vegetation specifically) and sciences. I have a background as a field Botanist and have collected and identified plants all over my fantastic country. After graduating in Biology, I then got a Masters degree with a study on Brazilian mistletoes. It is with great pleasure that I teach sciences and have done so in Brazil, UK, DK and AL. Some of my favorite aspects of teaching are hands-on projects and field trips because I believe we must live the knowledge instead of just hearing about it. In my spare time, I love swimming and hiking. I practice both as much as I can and everyone is  welcome to join me in any of these. I am very excited to be joining the ABIS family and I hope I can contribute and grow together.

Johanna Grünbacher

Religion Teacher PYP1 - 2, MYP 1-5

I am looking forward to being part of the ABIS team and being able to connect music and religious education in my lessons.

When I’m not teaching, I love to sing, play the violin and hike in the mountains.

Trond Harstad

Homeroom Teacher Group 1

I am very happy to join the ABIS Early Learning Center team this September. During the last five years I have been working in different kindergartens and nurseries in Linz. I am Norwegian and have been living in Linz since 1997 with my Austrian girlfriend. Together we have a twelve-year-old daughter.

I look forward to guiding and supporting the children in achieving and developing numerous skills during their time in the ELC.

Sandra Stadlhofer

PYP Homeroom Teacher

My name is Sandra Stadlhofer and I am excited to be returning to ABIS next school year! After having joined the school in 2015, I decided to take last year off so I could follow my dream of traveling long term through Latin America. I consider myself lucky having had many opportunities to engage in an international environment over the years and learn immensely by working with people from different backgrounds. As much as I appreciate being able to broaden my horizon when abroad, I also love Austria and its nature and mountains. Besides hiking or climbing, I am into arts, crafts or baking.

As a teacher, I have always been focused on building a strong relationship with each child and creating a safe and nurturing environment for them to become confident and independent individuals. It is a great honor to watch a child exploring and discovering their own strengths in all areas of learning and life.

I am looking forward to continuing growing together with my future students and being a part of this special school community again.

Anna Vas

PYP Teacher Assistant

I am Anna Vas, and I am really excited to start my first year as a teaching assistant at ABIS. I was born in Budapest, Hungary. I have an MA in English and American Studies and teaching English. I also have a CELTA degree. I used to teach teenagers and adults but had a career break for the last years. After living in a small Québec town for four years, we moved to Linz in 2021. My two daughters, Lili and Emilie are studying at ABIS, and it is during their first year here that I have learnt how important teaching assistants are in the school. I hope to help and guide children to the best of my abilities in their learning experience.

Our family loves outdoors and food. We enjoy the cultural life that Linz provides, as well as the position of the city in the centre of Europe. I have been writing a blog for the last four years, centred around slow living and slow food. My other hobby is photography, sadly I don’t have that many opportunities to practice it at the moment. We also love spending time in our weekend cottage at Lake Balaton in Hungary.

Kirsi Wells

PYP Teacher Assistant

I’m really looking forward to being a part of ABIS team for the upcoming school year!

I’m a nature and sport loving teacher from Finland. I graduated with the Masters in Education in Finland. I spent my early professional years in primary school teaching mainly 1st and 2nd grade students. However, after having children and relocating abroad twice, I have been busy at home. I am excited to return to my passion; education and working with children.

Being a parent of 3 myself, I love to spend time with bright young minds. Loving and caring by nature, my goal is to help students to find their strengths and learn more. I enjoy working in a team. I’m a team player and with my own example try to create an atmosphere where children learn and respect each other in the classroom. Outside of work I enjoy outdoor activities with the family, winter skiing and summer camping and long walks.

I’m looking forward to getting to know the students and families. I’m sure we will have so much fun together! See you soon.

Gerrit Steiner

PYP German Teacher

My name ist Gerrit Steiner. I’m a 23 years old girl from Lower Austria living in Linz. I always wanted to be a teacher and finally completed my studies looking forward to teach German at ABIS.

About my personality: I am a very cheerful und determined person, who has a passion for sports and music. Curiosita – one of the seven principles of Leonardo da Vinci – which means: the insatiable curiosity about life and the constant search for new knowledge, describes me very well.

I am happy to be part of ABIS and hope for a pleasant cooperation between parents, teachers and students and most importantly: enjoyable experiences within the school community.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Sara Hoxha

After School Care

I am Sara and I am 25 years old. I came to Linz a year ago to start my second masters in Computer Mathematics. While still trying to integrate myself in Austria by learning the language and soaking more from the culture, in these post-lockdowns time, I am delighted and looking forward to be part of the vibrant team of ABIS.

In my former experience, I have been involved in higher education with students of a greater age. However, I am very fond of the age group that is being taught at ABIS and I think this will be a very valuable experience for me to learn more and evolve.

I enjoy sharing my knowledge and expertise with the others. I have always been interested in maths and logics so problem solving is one of my favourite activities. In my free time, I spend quality time with my family and friends. I love being outside and I am very happy I can explore the beautiful Austrian nature.

Evi Ehrenreich, Dr. med

ABIS Doctor

I grew up in Salzburg, Austria. My early times at scouts taught me to love meeting people from all over the world, which I still do! At the age of 16 I spent one year in French Canada, where I learned that you can eat French fries together with cheese and gravy (yupp, it is really done!). Before I went to university to become a medical doctor at Innsbruck, I worked in tourism – from cleaning toilets to arranging big catering-events.

Today, my heart beats for medicine. I am a general practitioner working different medical jobs, one of them being the school doctor of ABIS. My task as a school doctor is mainly preventive medicine, to screen for early signs of medical issues and counsel how to solve them before they become a real problem.

ABIS clinic is next to the gym, in the gym office. If you need anything, just knock on the door – always happy to help!

Elhome Spahiu

PYP Homeroom Teacher

My name is Elhome and I am really excited about joining the ABIS Team.

This year I am graduating with my bachelor’s degree for primary school. In my studies I specialized in language education. I grew up multilingual and can therefore respond very well to children who are in the process of learning German from scratch.

In my free time I enjoy learning new languages, traveling the world and getting to know new cultures. Besides English and German, I also speak Albanian and Spanish.

When the children later look back on their school days, they should be able to say that they like remembering it, that their strengths were recognized and that they felt supported in their personal development.

I am looking forward to the upcoming year and the new experiences at ABIS.

Karen Marquez

ASC and Kitchen Staff

I’m Karen Marquez, I’m from Ecuador, living here in Austria for 2 years. Currently I work as an assistant in the kitchen with Rachel, and three times a week I help in the afternoon childcare.

My experience with childcare was in England in a nursery where I learnt a lot about childcare and teaching children.

Arife Öncel

PYP German Teacher Assistant
My name is Arife and I am 28 years old. I am training to be a teacher at the Pedagogical University Upper Austria. I love working with children and I think that laughing, a sense of humor and respect are some of the most important parts of the teaching job. I am originally from Turkey but have kurdish roots too.
I am looking forward to working as the German Teacher Assistant in PYP next school year.

I’m looking forward to the challenges of my new position, and am very happy to be working with such a fantastic team of teachers as our school continues on its journey. I’ve been working closely with Ms. Lyke and Ms. Untersperger to make sure the transition is smooth, and can’t wait to begin my new role in September!

Away from school, I enjoy spending time outdoors in the beautiful Austrian countryside with my family, reading and cycling. I also like to cook. And eat.

For the last three years, I have enjoyed working at ABIS as a teacher assistant and ASC member. I am excited to be the team leader of After School Care from next year on.
