FAQs

Can my child join ABIS during the school year?

We are prepared to welcome international students throughout the school year. However, we advise that a change is better at the beginning of the school year, after Christmas or at the start of term 2 (end of February).

For Austrian students we recommend changing from their current kindergarten/ school at the beginning of the new school year only.

Can you give me more information regarding the screening process at entrance?

Screening process for PYP1: Your child will be invited to attend a screening which normally takes place in early March at ABIS. Your child will be assessed in a group environment on fine and gross motor skills, and social skills. There is no need to prepare your child as it is not a knowledge based test.

Screening process for PYP 2 to PYP 5: Your child will be invited to attend an individual screening before entering. In order to assign your child to the right grade, we will look at your child’s Maths and English skills.

Screening process for MYP 1 to MYP 3 (grades 6 to 8): Your child will be invited to attend an individual screening before entering. In order to assign your child to the right grade, we will look at your child’s Maths, English, German and Science skills. Additionally, your child will have an interview with our MYP coordinator.

Screening process for MYP 4 to MYP 5: Students are required to transfer from an IB MYP school to enter MYP4 and 5 (grades 9 and 10). Your child will be invited to attend an individual screening before entering. In order to assign your child to the right grade, we will look at your child’s Maths, English, German and Science skills. Additionally, your child will have an interview with our MYP coordinator.

When will I know whether my child has a definite space at ABIS?

After completed registration:

1.   For the current school year, you will be advised individually, pending availability of spaces and successful screening results (commencing from PYP2 onwards). For MYP: after they have successfully passed the screening process and/or we have the resources available for support.

2. For future school years:

ELC: Final confirmation will be sent out in April for the following school year

PYP 1: Screening takes place at the beginning of March. Confirmation will be sent out by the end of March.

PYP 2 –to PYP 5: Confirmation upon request, pending availability of spaces and successful screening results

MYP 1 to MYP 3 (grades 6 to 8): Confirmation upon request, pending availability of spaces and successful screening results

My child does not know any English yet, is this a problem?

We offer English Language Support for students who do not speak English. From PYP3, there will be an additional fee involved. Please refer to our Admission Policy

How many students are there per class?

The maximum number of students per class is 25. Currently we have an average number of students of 19 per class across the whole school.

My child does not know any German yet, is this a problem? Will my child learn German and how many hours?

Our language of instruction is English. Your child will have 5 hours of German in PYP and 4 hours of German in MYP, on different levels.

Do you have boarding facilities for students?

Unfortunately, we do not offer any boarding facilities at ABIS. There are no international schools in and around Linz that provide boarding facilities for Upper Secondary Education.

Our current school cannot complete form 2 in English, what shall we do?

As this form is a requirement for admission, the form will need to be officially translated to English. We do not accept form 2 filled in by parents.

We also require a copy of the two most recent school reports in English (or officially translated into English), as mentioned on our application form.

Do you also provide the IB Diploma Programme?

Unfortunately, we do not offer the IB Diploma Programme here at ABIS. For DP related queries, please contact Linz International School (LISA) at Europagymnasium Auhof: https://lisa.europagym.at/).

Do you offer After School Activities at ABIS?

At ABIS, we offer – for PYP mostly – a wide range of activities by teachers, outside professionals and parents at additional cost. In the past, these  have included chess, cooking classes, Spanish, Italian, German, Creative Dance, football, rugby, coding classes, painting and many others. The actual programme depends on the availability of the activity leaders.
