The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) is a challenging and internationally respected academic programme designed for students in Grades 11 and 12. Students study six subjects in total, choosing three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, and complete a rigorous curriculum that culminates in final examinations and the award of the IB Diploma.
Established in 1968, the IB DP was originally created to provide a globally recognised qualification for students studying outside their home countries. Today, it is offered in nearly 5,000 schools across more than 140 countries and is widely valued for its strong preparation for university studies. The diploma is recognised by universities around the world, including universities in Austria, opening doors to higher education opportunities internationally.
How does the Diploma Programme at ABIS support our Guiding Statements and align with our definition of High Quality Learning?
The curriculum consists of the DP core alongside six subject groups. The three compulsory core components are designed to enrich students’ educational experience and encourage them to apply their knowledge and skills in meaningful and challenging ways.
The IB’s Diploma Programme (DP) is recognized and respected by the world’s leading universities, and evidence suggests that higher rates of DP students go on to university and higher education study than non-IB students.
Learning a second language helps students deepen their understanding of different cultures, including their own, while exploring globally significant ideas and issues through multiple linguistic perspectives. This also strengthens their communication skills and prepares them to engage more confidently in an interconnected world.
In TOK, students explore various disciplines of knowledge and examine how knowledge is created and connected across them. They become aware of their own personal, cultural, and ideological assumptions, and gradually develop an appreciation of different perspectives as well as the diversity of global viewpoints.
Through in-depth investigation of their research question, students build strong skills in research, analysis, and evaluation. The 4,000-word essay also provides valuable preparation for undergraduate-level study. It encourages independent learning and academic discipline by requiring students to manage their own research process over an extended period.
The most impactful activities are student-initiated and make a meaningful contribution to the community. Students are encouraged to collaborate in teams, pushing themselves and one another to grow. Reflecting on their learning and experiences is central to high-quality participation, as is the ability to plan effectively and evaluate their progress.
To be eligible for the IB Diploma students must choose six subjects, including at least three courses at Higher Level (HL) and options from groups 1-5.
